Formally asking a government department for information

Responsible Concerned Public Authority / State Information Commission, UP

Where to complain

What to have ready

  • Written application addressed to the Public Information Officer (PIO)
  • Prescribed fee

Having these to hand before you start makes the complaint faster to file and much stronger if you later need to escalate it.

If it is not resolved · escalate in this order

Typical timeframe 30 days for a standard response (48 hours if life or liberty is involved)

  1. 01 Public Information Officer (PIO) of the department You start here For a UP state department, submit the application directly to that department's PIO as per the State RTI Rules.
  2. 02 First Appellate Authority if there is no reply within 30 days, or the reply is unsatisfactory
  3. 03 State Information Commission, UP, or the Central Information Commission final escalation

Keep your complaint reference number at every stage. It is the only thing that lets any office — or this platform's follow-up support — trace what actually happened to your case.
